Dr. William Davey Crockett believes that there is no better cure than stopping oral health problems before they start. Preventive dentistry is a combination of professional care and proper at-home hygiene. Careful maintenance can reduce your risk of developing painful dental conditions and the need for extensive restorative procedures. At Davey Crockett Dentistry in Richmond, VA, we offer routine exams and cleanings to eliminate plaque and tartar while checking for any oral health issues. We also provide fluoride supplements, which can strengthen dental enamel and prevent decay, especially in children. Meanwhile, when you come in for your regular visits, we can make suggestions for improved brushing and flossing. We are here to help establish lasting oral health for yourself and your family.
Preventive dentistry can help you avoid serious oral health issues.
The Importance of Preventive Dentistry
There’s an old saying: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This is certainly true when it comes to your smile. Decay and gum disease can cause significant discomfort and tooth loss. These conditions can also increase your risk of conditions such as heart disease and pneumonia. Fortunately, these conditions are very easy to prevent. Bacteria are the fundamental cause of decay and periodontitis. Six-month cleanings, daily flossing, and brushing twice daily can remove bacteria and minimize your risks of harmful oral health issues.
At each checkup, your hygienist will perform a thorough cleaning to remove oral bacteria, as well as the plaque and tartar that build up over time.
Preventive Treatment at Davey Crockett Dentistry
We recommend biannual cleanings, but in some cases, we encourage more frequent visits. For instance, if you have been diagnosed with gum disease, we recommend visiting us three to four times per year. At each checkup, your hygienist will perform a thorough cleaning to remove oral bacteria, as well as the plaque and tartar that build up over time. After your cleaning, Dr. Bousaba will carefully examine your teeth and gums. He will look for:
- Visible signs of decay
- Enamel erosion
- Structural damage to your teeth, like chips or small cracks
- Gum inflammation, bleeding, and other indications of gum disease
- Oral sores and other conditions that could indicate periodontal disease
Dr. Bousaba will usually take x-rays once a year.
In addition to exams and cleanings, fluoride treatments can also prevent decay. Found naturally in many foods and most city water supplies, fluoride helps to strengthen dental enamel, especially in the developmental stages. We often recommend fluoride for adults, as well.
Caring for Your Teeth at Home
After your dental appointment, we will discuss your daily hygiene routine and can suggest improvements to your brushing and flossing techniques. In general, we recommend:
- Brushing twice a day and flossing at least once
- Waiting at least 30 minutes after meals before brushing your teeth
- Using a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste
- Using gliding motions to floss, rather than up and down movements
- Cutting back on sugar and refined starches
- Drinking plenty of water with meals
Of course, there are many other ways that you can protect your smile, and we are happy to explain these measures to you at your appointment.
