If you develop a dental infection, it can cause a significant toothache, discomfort, and can affect your overall health. Dr. W. Davey Crockett provides gentle, conservative root canal treatment at his Richmond, VA, practice to eliminate dental infection and prevent further damage. Many people associate root canal therapy with uncomfortable procedures. However, at Davey Crockett Dentistry, we use very gentle techniques and safe, effective sedation dentistry. You can feel almost nothing during your treatment, and enjoy a tremendous relief from your toothache following your procedure.
Dental Infections and Your Root Canal Candidacy
Dental infections can develop when bacteria reaches the soft tissues at the center of your tooth. Typically, this damage happens when a cavity goes undetected and untreated. Infection can also occur when a tooth is badly damaged. Restorative dentistry treatment is necessary to strengthen teeth, preventing bacteria from reaching the vulnerable interior of your tooth structure.
Without treatment, infection could spread to your other teeth, your gums, and even your jawbone. Therefore, root canal treatment can protect your complete oral health
The soft tissue inside your tooth contains nerve endings that extend through your root canals. As infection spreads, bacteria can travel down into your root canals, causing sharp or radiating pain. Often, your toothache will grow worse in response to heat or cold. In some cases, pain may also spread across jaw and into your ears. Other symptoms of a dental infection include gum abscesses, chronic bad breath, and internal tooth discoloration. If you experience any of these symptoms, you are likely a candidate for root canal therapy. Dr. Crockett or a member of our team can perform a thorough exam to determine if this treatment is best for your needs.
What Happens During a Root Canal?
Prior to your root canal, Dr. Crockett will numb your tooth. As a result, you should feel little more than a gentle pressure during the procedure. If you suffer from dental anxiety, we can also provide additional sedation, such as nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation.
During the first step of treatment, Dr. Crockett will remove all bacteria and infected tissue, and shape your tooth to support a dental restoration. He will then fill your root canals with a soft, rubber-like substance called gutta-percha. We will also take impressions of your tooth so that our in-house lab technician can create a unique dental crown to restore your tooth structure. This process typically takes about two weeks. While you are waiting, we can provide a temporary restoration. Once your restoration is complete, Dr. Crockett will ensure a proper fit and secure it in place.

The Benefits of Root Canal Therapy
An immediate benefit of root canal therapy is that it can eliminate the pain of dental infection. Your damaged tooth will also receive support and protection from your new crown, preventing further decay and dental trauma. Additionally, without treatment, infection could spread to your other teeth, your gums, and even your jawbone. Therefore, this general dentistry treatment can protect your complete oral health.
