Virtually Painless Tooth Extraction

Retaining healthy dental tissue is the priority in dentistry. However, there are some situations in which a tooth extraction is the best way to restore health to your smile. In other cases, an extraction might be needed to give your teeth more room to properly erupt or to alleviate the symptoms of problematic wisdom teeth.

At Davey Crockett Dentistry in Richmond, VA, we will always try to avoid the need for extraction whenever possible. But if needed, Dr. William Davey Crockett can perform an extraction using gentle techniques and sedation dentistry to help make your procedure as comfortable as possible.

Tooh extraction does not have to hurt. Dr. Crockett can restore your smile in comfort.

Reasons Why You Might Need an Extraction

There are several reasons why you might need a tooth extraction during your lifetime, including:

  • Overcrowding: Crowded teeth can lead to misalignment and poor oral hygiene. If you decide to undergo orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign®, an extraction can help give your teeth the room they need to move into their ideal positions.
  • Wisdom teeth: Although some wisdom teeth erupt without issues, impacted wisdom teeth can cause oral health issues. A wisdom tooth extraction can provide relief and benefit oral health. Many patients elect to have their children's wisdom teeth removed before they cause issues.
  • Advanced decay: In some cases, Dr. Crockett can treat severe decay or infection with root canal therapy. But if your tooth is too badly damaged, an extraction may be the best solution. A replacement tooth supported by a dental implant can provide tremendous benefits.
  • Trauma: Accidental damage to your tooth can sometimes be repaired with restorative or cosmetic dentistry treatments. But if the damage compromises the strength and integrity of your tooth, an extraction may be a better option.
  • Impacted teeth: Wisdom teeth aren't the only ones that can become impacted. Impaction in any area of your smile can damage nearby teeth, and extraction may be the best solution.

No matter why you need an extraction, Dr. Bousaba will only recommend the procedure if he believes it is the best way to restore the health of your smile.

At Davey Crockett Dentistry, we make extractions as comfortable as possible by using advanced techniques, offering sedation options, and informing our patients of what to expect throughout the treatment.

Surgery Day

On the day of your extraction, you should wear comfortable clothing to our office. Once in the dentist's chair, your dentist will administer local anesthesia to numb the extraction site. If you choose, you can also receive nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation to achieve deeper relaxation during the procedure.

Once you are numb and relaxed, the dentist will use forceps to gently rock your tooth back and forth in its socket. In some cases, he will also need to create incisions in the gums tissue to free an impacted tooth.

After the tooth is removed from its socket, the dentist will suture your gums and place gauze at the extraction site to promote clotting.

Ensuring a Healthy Recovery

Before you leave our office, we will provide post-operative instructions to ensure a healthy recovery and reduce your risk of complications such as dry socket. Most patients are fully healed in one to two weeks. If necessary, we can explain your tooth replacement options with you.
